The Challenge
Despite having a loyal customer base, IGA Mount Plymouth struggled with ongoing fresh food shrink and excess produce waste—an issue that was cutting into margins and limiting store efficiency.
Like many independent grocers, they needed a simple way to reduce waste, recover lost sales, and attract new customers—all while staying competitive with larger grocery chains nearby. Reducing waste wasn’t just a financial goal—it aligned with IGA’s broader commitment to sustainability and serving the local community responsibly.
The Solution
Nisha and her husband Nakul, owners of IGA Mount Plymouth, are always exploring innovative digital tools to streamline operations. Since partnering with Flashfood in January 2022, they’ve seen how the platform can do far more than just reduce waste—it helps them engage their community and strengthen customer loyalty. “The more we looked into Flashfood, the more we realized how easy the app is to implement into our operations,” said Nisha. “It not only helps us cut shrink and waste, but also attracts more shoppers and strengthens customer loyalty.”.
The Implementation
Getting started with Flashfood was fast and seamless. The onboarding process was simple, and the Flashfood support team provided clear guidance every step of the way to ensure a smooth rollout. Even after launch, the team stays in close contact—offering ongoing support, performance insights, and best practices to keep results strong over time.
Once live, the process quickly became part of IGA’s daily routine. Each morning, a team member scans items nearing expiration and posts them to the app in just a few minutes. “It’s super easy—quick to set up and easy to manage day to day,” said Nisha. “It doesn’t take much time at all, and it’s made a real difference in helping us reduce waste.”
Flashfood also helped amplify the launch with marketing support - including email outreach, push notifications, and in-store materials - to spread the word quickly and drive early shopper adoption.
Produce boxes and fresh items are posted at discounted prices six days a week, giving customers access to affordable groceries while helping the store cut shrink and recover lost revenue.
The Results
After more than three years with Flashfood, IGA Mount Plymouth has turned food waste reduction into a consistent, measurable success. In 2024, the store maintained a 47% sell-through rate, posting more than $16,200 in products and selling $7,650 worth of items that might have otherwise gone to waste. That’s nearly 3,750 pounds of food diverted and 77 new customers gained in one year.
With postings going live six times per week and an average of $44 posted per day, Flashfood has become part of IGA’s daily routine—helping staff recover profit while providing shoppers with affordable, high-quality food.
